diffuse

Found this little app in the repositories, called diffuse.  What I need to do is find the differences between the output of dpkg –get-selections for my machine, and a mate’s machine (still looking at this Flash business…)

Ubuntu Flash problems

On a fresh install of Ubunutu 9.04, upon trying to setup Flash and other stuff to view Youtube videos (through following the prompts etc), as soon as Flash went on there Firefox started getting laggy.  And performance on Youtube was very choppy - 2 frames/sec.

So here’s my steps as I do them to try and resolve this:

1. Open Package Manager.  Sort for installed packages, and search for flash.   Select whatever you get for Complete Removal.
Mine had adobe-flashplugin, and gnash.

2. Go to http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/.   Select the .tar.gz version, and download.  Save it to your desktop or something.

3. Extract the tar.  I just did it in the GUI, right-click, Extract here.

4. Double-click the file "flashplayer-installer", and select Run In Terminal

5.  Follow the prompts. It’ll ask you to close your browsers.

I’ve given it a go.  It’s better, but still seems to "freeze up" every few seconds and miss some frames.  Back to the drawing board….

(update) - OK, the outcome.  It worked OK when I closed all my other tabs.  I had a couple of forums, this blog, slashdot and a VMWare web interface open at the time.  So it looks like a general Firefox performance issue now.  Close enough - I don’t go on Youtube THAT much.
