Installing Flash - 8.04 Hardy

June 6, 2009

After all the problems I’ve had with Flash on Jaunty, and problems in the past, I think I’ve found the solution.

Run:

apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree

That’s it!

I’ll see how it goes, and your mileage may vary, but it seems to have done the trick (only took a complete rebuild of the box to an earlier OS, so I could watch YouTube videos… )

Lesson learnt - check the burn

While I remember, and as much a reminder for myself than anyone else, when doing a fresh install of Ubuntu and you get to the first menu which has the option "Check disc for defects", do this first!  I wasted a pile of time making 2 install attempts with a CD which turned out to have 1 dodgy file on it, which was enough for the install process to crap out about 80% of the way through.

It only takes about 5 mins to do the check, and may save you a pile of time.

Dummy Spit - had enough of 9.04/Flash

See, this is you should never be on the bleeding edge.  Shit doesn’t work!  Let other people work this crap out, because I can’t be bothered.

After buggerising around for ages trying to find how to fix my Flash problems, I keep seeing mentioned that people with similar issues have started having these problems since 9.04, or sometimes since 8.10.  I was happy with 8.04 LTS Hardy, so I’m going back to it.

And there’s nothing you can do to stop me!

See you soon when I’m back on my old/new OS.
